Wayne holds off Hoover 4-3 in softball regional
There would be no comeback this time for Herbert Hoover. Kasey Endicott scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Wayne the lead for good and pitcher Jessie Rowe kept it that way, setting down the Huskies in order the final two innings to secure a 4-3 victory Thursday evening in the Class AA Region 4 final. A crowd of about 400 ringed Michael D. Chandler Field at Herbert Hoover High School in Falling Rock. The Pioneers (26-5), who finished fourth in the final state coaches association poll, advance to the double-elimination state tournament for the first time since 1994, taking on LibShady Spring (14-12) at approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson Park in Vienna. The No. 3 Huskies (22-5), who made four errors Thursday, saw their 14-game winning streak come to an end ...click on headline for full article... FULL STORY

Homeowners, counties want say in low-income housing projects
A state housing agency isn't giving homeowners and elected officials enough of a say in whether developers can build low-income projects in towns and counties in West Virginia, a Kanawha County official and Knollwood Drive homeowners said Friday. During a public hearing, Kanawha County Engineer John Luoni and Knollwood Drive residents sharply criticized the West Virginia Housing Development Fund's latest plan that awards points and spells out the criteria for distributing low-income housing tax credits to developers. "The overall plan places developers and their proposed project ahead of the concerns and well-being of the existing residents in the neighborhood," said John Luoni, the county's chief engineer. "There needs to be more balance between helping developers get tax credits and protecting homeowners from inappropriate developments that significantly change the character and quality of life in the neighborhood." ...click on headline for full article... FULL STORY

Study says Kanawha property values 'inconsistent'
The Kanawha County Assessor's Office has been "somewhat inconsistent" and "unfair" in the way it values properties, according to a study by an independent contractor hired by the state. The study claims the county did not apply the same factors used to determine the cost of properties that sold to properties in the same area that didn't sell. County officials said they aren't sure the problems cited in the study are accurate and pointed out that the study is merely a draft. Steve Duffield, supervisor of the Assessor's Real Estate and Reappraisal Division, said he hasn't had a chance to discuss the study with the contractor. He also hasn't seen the information the contractor used to determine whether the county's process was consistent ...click on headline for full article... FULL STORY

Prep softball: Hoover one win from State Tournament
Missy Smith has had a lot of success coaching, leading the George Washington volleyball team to six State Tournament berths out of seven years to go along with two state titles as the Patriot coach. Also the coach of the Herbert Hoover softball team, Smith has had a lot of solid teams throughout her six years leading the Huskies, but playing in an extremely difficult region, the State Tournament has eluded her. A lot of that is attributed to the fact that Smith is in the same region as Chapmanville, which has won three state titles in her previous five seasons as Husky coach ...click on headline for full article FULL STORY

Hoover Baseball prevails over Sissonville in eight, 4-3
Herbert Hoover coach Brian Young said Clayton Edens has become the team's de facto closer this season. On Monday, Edens took his act to both halves of the eighth inning. The senior came off the bench and sat Sissonville down in order in the top of the eighth, then laced a single to right field in the bottom to score Tristan Fields as the host Huskies claimed the first game of Class AA Region 4 Section 1, 4-3. "I haven't felt that good all season to be honest," Edens said. "That was a good feeling running in from second base after that hit. That started us off on the right foot. We're going to roll off of that from here." ...click on headline for full article... FULL STORY

Their Opinion

A creepy decision by the housing fund
A creepy decision by the housing fund
Pushing out tax credits should not be the overarching consideration ... The West Virginia Housing Development Fund once required developers seeking federal tax credits or loans to build subsidized housing to round up expressions of support from the jurisdictions in which the projects would be built. In 2009, because local residents objected, Mason County commissioners refused to give a developer a letter of support for a project. He wanted to build on land owned by his friend, state Treasurer John Perdue. State treasurers sit on the housing fund board. The developer threatened the commissioners, and in the end, the fund's board did away with the policy of requiring expressions of support from local officials. The board poured $3.67 million in federal stimulus funds into the project ...click on headline for full editorial... FULL STORY
